Mumbai Bombay Environmental Action Group (BEAG) on Wednesday informed the Bombay High Court that despite the court’s orders, large-scale mangrove-cutting within 20 metres from mangrove cover in the Mira-Bhayander area as well as Versova was still on.

Based on a PIL filed by BEAG, the court had passed an order in 2005 banning the cutting of mangroves all over the state with certain exceptions and conditions.

However, on Wednesday BEAG lawyer Gautam Patel stated before a division bench of Justice J N Patel and Justice K K Tated that in suburban Versova and in neighbouring Mira-Bhayander, mangroves are being destroyed. BEAG claimed before the court that as per its inspection report an artificial beach is being developed at Jesal Park in Bhayander East. The report says that mangroves are being destroyed in RNP and SNP college areas through diversion of sea-water and garbage dumping. It is further alleged that unauthorised hutments on mangrove lands have been given electricity connections by the local municipal corporation. The report points out an instance where the Mira-Bhayander Corporation is dumping garbage on mangrove plots. The report further points out that in Versova, construction debris is killing mangroves behind the Richie Rich Cold Storage facility. The court has said that it will ensure that court orders are followed and has asked the NGO to point out all these details in an affidavit before the hearing next week.
