Kolkata Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Tuesday criticised many city-based NGOs, alleging that they are hindering developmental programmes. “Certain NGOs and individuals have developed the habit of filing public interest litigations against the government without realising that in most cases they are hindering development,” he said.

The CM was speaking at the foundation laying ceremony of a water treatment plant at Dhapa, a project that was delayed by nearly two years due to a pending litigation in the High Court. Citing the construction of Sarat Sadan in Howrah Maidan, which was delayed due to a PIL filed by an NGO, he said: “The area was a garbage dump and yet the PIL claimed the project will affect greenery of the area.”
