While the electoral office has started broadcasting jingles to promote voting, Jaagore and Exercising Franchise for Good Governance (EFG) have set up websites and helplines that tell you why you should vote and how you can register yourself.
Still in its initial stages, EFG will become fully functional starting November 19, after which it plans to organise “jogs for democracy” at popular parks in the city. On November 27, the NGO plans to organise a human chain with the help of 600 college students, to encourage more people from every strata to vote these elections.
Jaagore, set up in partnership with Tata, has a fully functional website (www.jaagore. com), where one can get voter ID forms and also find out about the nearest polling booth. If that is not enough, one can dial the helpline number provided on the website for more information.
Commenting on the necessity of such an initiative, Vikas Ratanjee, Jaagore coordinator in Delhi, said, “When every service, starting from mobile connections to banking, can have a customer service, then why not something as important as voting? Very soon, we will also start setting up camps at various universities to encourage young voters to participate in elections.”
He says more than one lakh people from all over India have registered themselves on the website.
Uttam Prakash of EFG said he took up the initiative after noticing the falling percentage of voters in the Capital.
