I will maintain a website (and other means) to report the number of cases of corruption that have come to me and those that have been resolved. If there is anyone demanding hafta, I pledge to immediately intervene within 24 hours and report such cases to the Police Commissioners Anti Corruption Bureau to get the public servant concerned arrested...
- If sanitation workers are not doing their job and garbage repeatedly accumulates, I can be personally contacted on a 12-hour helpline maintained at the ward level...
These some of the hard-hitting pledges that a group of people intend to get signed from candidates. The pledge, that has 12 such vows, is a part of the initiative called ‘Padayatra’ which aims to appeal to the citizens against voting for the candidate who is not ready to sign the pledge.
The key people behind the movement are from varied backgrounds and include Dr Satish Rajamchikar, who has made socially-relevant documentaries on various subjects like child labour, women’s empowerment, racial bias and so on. Others in the group include Vinod Bodhankar of Jal Biradari, retired naval officer Anup Awasthi, Susan Raj of The Academic Advisors (TAA) and Medha Jatar & Ranjit Jatar who are associated with Nova Edge Solutions Pvt Ltd.
As many as 15 NGOs have agreed to be a part of ‘Padyatra’ that begins Tuesday and will end on February 13. The NGOs include Samarth Bharat, Jal Biradari, Wanowrie Resident Forum, Three S Bharat, Sajag Nagrik Manch, Human Development Harmony Foundation, Parivartan, Grahak Panchayat, TAA India and so on. Various locations have been finalised for the campaign that will be held from 3 pm to 7 pm.
To reach out to maximum people, a webpage has been created on the social networking website Facebook - ‘Let’s Do It! Pune - Pune Padayatra’. “We have been receiving a number of calls from students, senior citizens, NRIs, working professionals and so on. The number of people joining the movement should cross 250,” said Awasthi.
Just before the voting day, the ‘Padayatra’ group will announce the names of the candidates who have signed the pledge and also the names of those who haven’t. “This will help the public to decide rationally. If a candidate refuses to sign it, then it is understood that either he is corrupt or he/she does not think about the welfare of the city and the nation. Till now, 15 Independent candidates have agreed to sign the pledge,” said Jatar.
