Mumbai Various city-based NGOs and Administrative Local Managements (ALMs) have decided to hold a mass protest outside Congress MP Priya Dutt’s office on January 29, to condemn political anarchy and demand more teeth to give citizens groups.

The decision comes a day after a citizen group’s fight against illegal hoardings took a nasty turn.

On Friday evening, the members of Jagruth Nagrik Manch (JNM) held a protest down SV Road, garlanding illegal political hoardings from Bandra’s Nandi Galli (Lucky Hotel) to the Khar Railway Station.

The activists who were part of the protest, said that Congress corporator Prakash Bobadi, who was upset by their act, reportedly filed an FIR against two of their members.

“Till Saturday morning we did not know that an FIR has been filed against us. But, they said our protest was creating a riot like situation and hence we were under the scrutiny,” said Aftab Siddiqui, ALM member from Khar area. The FIR has been filed against Siddiqui and one Anandani Thakoor from the Khar Residents’ Assoication.

To show their solidarity with the activists and to put a clear message that citizens will not take anything lying down, various NGOs on Sunday decided that they will unite and protest against such political pressures. “We will have two-pronged attack against politicians who are using their power arbitrarily. As NGOs and ALMs we will take up a legal course so as to educate ourselves and the city on the legality of illegal hoardings. Moreover, we will not hesitate in filing a counter FIR on those who have filed the case against us,” said Adolf D’Souza, independent Corporator and member of the Juhu Citizens’ Welfare Group.

Meanwhile, Siddiqui maintains that they had all the necessary permissions for the protest. “Let them do what they want to, we will try our best to maintain the pressure as we know that we haven’t done anything wrong,” he said. Despite repeated attempts, there was no response from the Congress Party representatives on this issue.
