Nigdi-COEP corridor favoured for metro rail

Pune, February 27 The Pune Municipal Corporation, which is in the process of formulating a comprehensive mobility plan for the city, has found in a preliminary feasibility study that the corridor of COEP to Nigdi on the Mumbai-Pune highway as favourable for the metro rail service.

Municipal Corporation Praveensinh Pardeshi had called a meeting of various agencies working for different transportation service for the city to discuss on the preparation of comprehensive mobility plan on Wednesday. “The preliminary study consisting of home interview survey on the feasibility of the metro rail has favoured the corridor on Mumbai-Pune highway. However, the detail report will be ready by next week,” Pardeshi said.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is studying the possibility of metro rail on six corridors: Agricultural College to Nigdi via Pune Mumbai highway, Agricultural College to Warje via Jangli Maharaj Road and Karve Road, Agricultural College to Swargate via Shivaji Road, Agricultural College to Wagholi via Bund Garden Road, Agricultural College to Chinchwad via Aundh and Agricultural College to Hadapsar via Deccan.

Pardeshi said he has asked the agencies working on Delhi Metro, Water Transport, Tram, BRTS and other modes of public transport having a separate mobility study to come together. All the agencies with their findings have been asked to contribute in the preparation of comprehensive mobility plan keeping in mind the estimated growth of the city by 2031, he added.

As per the study, if nothing is done to improve the public transport service in the city the use of two-wheelers in the city will increase from 55 to 66 per cent by 2031 while there will be drop in commuters using public transport service from the 15 per cent now to 10 per cent.

The population in the PMC jurisdiction is estimated to grow to 5.63 million by 2031 from the existing 3 million while the population in Pune metropolitan region will be 11.41 million, the study said.

Similarly, the workforce will grow to 2.36 million in PMC limits, 41.83 per cent of the total population, while it will be 2.85 million by 2031 in Pune Metropolitan Region and 42.49 per cent of the total population by 2031.
