Nine months after ASI was killed by Maoists, daughter waits for CM’s promised job

Kolkata Her compensation was higher than the salary her father would have earned, so the govt cannot give her a job

A job promised by Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee seems a distant dream for Barnali Roy — the daughter of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Swapan Roy who was killed in the Maoist attack at Sankrail police station in October 2009.

Bhattacharjee promised that she would get the job in two months. But nine months have passed and the prospect of a job appears bleaker with each passing day as 24-year-old Barnali runs from pillar to post.

“We received the Rs 15 lakh compensation but the job appears a distant dream,” said Barnali.

“All my files were cleared by the West Midnapore SP and Western Range IG by the end of November.”

On November 30, she appeared in the exam for the recruitment of upper class division clerks.

“I was told that I have cleared the examination and all my files have been forwarded to the home department and are with the joint secretary,” she said. “I tried to meet him, but he was not available. We do not have a brother and we lost our father too. I need the job desperately for my family and to get my sister married,” she sobbed.

Barnali, who holds an MA in History, is now in charge of the family, which includes her mother and younger sister — her dream of becoming a teacher was abruptly shattered by her father’s death. The family lives at the police quarters in West Midnapore, which was arranged with the active cooperation of DGP Bhupinder Singh.

Asked why her file is languishing, a senior home department official said: “Her file has a note on it which states that the compensation she got was higher than the salary her father would have earned in his remaining years of service. So the compensation has been taken as her income and this prevents the government from giving her a job.”

“If this was the issue, why did the Chief Minister repeatedly announce that the relatives of the officers killed in the attack would get a compensation package and a job?” asked Barnali. “We banked on

his promise.”

“We are trying our level best to get her file cleared,” said DGP Bhupinder Singh. “But things are not moving positively. We do not understand why such a note has been put on her file. The compensation and the job for a relative are in the package declared by the

government for the victims of the Maoist attack. How can it

suddenly change?”

Nine months after ASI was killed by Maoists........... by D.A.Srinivasan on 02 Aug 2010

There is no word of honour for the politicians. If he had promised a job and compensation he should have monitored the progress to ensure that his word of assurances are met.Now some of the beurocrats will come with some exucuse to say why she cannot be given a job.If the Naxals are in full control of certain parts of India it is because the people affected by the misrule by our politicians and the Govt machinery have lost faith in the Govt and the Govt machienery. This coupled with the corruption from the highest level among the politicians and the beurocrats has put the poorest of the poor in great distress.Unless the politicians realise this and take corrective steps to reign in corruption and create confidence building measures more and more people will seek Naxal support.
