Kolkata/New Delhi Even as Union Home Minister P Chidambaram arrives in Kolkata on Tuesday to chair a key meeting of the chief ministers of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Orissa and Bihar to finalise plans to crack down on Naxals in close coordination, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar has decided to stay away and instead send the home secretary and the DGP as representatives reportedly on the advice of Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Jharkhand CM Shibu Soren has already arrived in Kolkata to attend the meeting at the Writers’ Buildings while Chidambaram and Orissa CM Naveen Patnaik will be reaching the state capital on Tuesday.

Chidambaram is coming here with a seven-member team of senior home ministry officials.

“The meeting will focus on things like security, intelligence gathering, joint forces and above all building up co-ordination among the four states in facing the problem,” Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen today said.

“The Centre in principle has agreed to give us six companies of central paramilitary forces and we will also ask for 10 more companies. We will justify our demand,” Sen added.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that Mamata urged Nitish to refrain from being seen with her arch rival Bhattacharjee after which the Bihar CM is said to have changed his mind. Bihar Home Secretary Amir Subbhani and DGP Anand Shankar will, however, attend the meeting.

Speculation has been rife about Mamta’s growing proximity with Nitish. Recently, the Bihar CM even flagged off two trains in his state on behalf of he railway minister and thanked her for giving him the opportunity.

The White Paper by the Railway Ministry targeting former minister Lalu Prasad Yadav was also said to have been an outcome of Nitish’s suggestion.

The JD(U) leader had, however, attended the CMs’ meeting on internal security in Delhi on Sunday.
