The UoP is now putting its foot down. Most such institutes start their sessions late, often in August. The university, which had been granting affiliation to such institutions in view of the future of students enrolled, noticed that such institutions are unable to complete the number of working days as required, as the sessions start late.

To prevent such a practice, UoP is believed to have urged the State Education Council to ensure that the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) does not include those colleges, which start their sessions after July 15, in the central admission processes regarding the courses.

An official revealed that Vice-Chancellor Narendra Jadhav had sent a letter to the State Education Council in this regard. “If colleges are given permission after July 15, it is difficult for them to complete the term. In such a case students suffer. It should be stopped,” said the official.

In the management council meeting of the university last month, it was revealed that three new management institutes in the city started their courses without the mandatory affiliation with the UoP.

But as AICTE and DTE had given them permission to start the courses, the UoP pondered whether to grant affiliation or not. The matter was referred to the law committee of the university. The committee cited a Supreme Court order, which states that if a central institute grants permission to any institute to start courses, the university had to give affiliation.

“We gave affiliation to the three institutes on the basis of the SC judgement,” said Sureshchandra Bhosale, a committee member, adding that it also was a matter of the future of students admitted to the institutes. But a senate member said it happened every time. “The university should be more strict while giving affiliation to such institutes. The local inquiry committees of the university finds such institutes every year but no action is taken,” he said.
