More than a dozen Punjabi singers and artists, including Sardool Sikandar, Ashok Masti, Inderjeet Nikku, Ishmeet, Balbir Boparai, performed at the function.
Around 1.30 pm, a group of around 200 boys created a ruckus outside the function venue after being denied entry despite having invitation cards.
Police had to resort to a mild lathicharge to drive them out of the campus. An officer said some boys had even tried to scale the college wall to get inside.
“It was all well managed last year. But this year, they are not letting us in despite producing invitation cards. I have got a family card which I have taken from my sister who is a student of the college,” said Deep Singh.
Family members of some students also said that they were denied entry from the gate facing the gurudwara. “This is not justified. We have come all the way from Moga to attend the function but they have denied us entry. We have been standing here for the past one hour while making incessant requests to let us in but to no avail,” said the mother of a student of the college.
Even some students claimed that were not allowed to enter. “I am a student of fashion designing and have been standing out for over an hour and a half,” said Ramandeep, a student.
Gurbir Singh, president of the Guru Nanak Education Trust and son of the college founder, said, “It happens. Some genuine people are left out because of the others who try to create a ruckus. And we regret any unpleasantness. We had informed the police of this well in advance and we could not do anything till they were here in full force”.
