Chandigarh, March 4 Punjab Industry Minister Manoranjan Kalia today put to rest all speculations on re-imposing octroi in the state.

While replying to a question asked by Congress MLA Ramdeep Singh Nabha in the House today, the minister made it clear that there was no proposal under the consideration of the state government to re-impose octroi in Punjab.

The minister however refused to commit himself when asked if the present stance of the government on octroi would continue for the next four years of the government.

The Congress MLA was categorical in asking if the decision not to re-impose octroi, as stated by the minister, was a temporary one in wake of the forthcoming panchayat and municipal elections in the state. The minister preferred not to react to this.

However, the Speaker, Nirmal Singh Kahlon, in a lighter vein reacted to this saying, “It will be known only after the elections are over.” In the run up to the Budget session, talks that the government was contemplating re-imposition of octroi, had been doing the rounds. The state government is bearing an annual loss of Rs 650 crore by abolishing octroi.
