Sources said the decision has been taken following the extern notices were given to student leaders, Vikas Dubey and Surendra Singh, by the police at the University Pavilion.

While Hari Kiran Rao, General Secretary of MSUSU, was not available for his comments, Amita Mistry, Vice-President of MSUSU, said: “According to MSU Handbook rules and regulation, police should not be allowed on the campus unless it takes consent from the competent authorities."

There are 24 faculty representatives (FRs), general secretary (GS), vice-president, president, two Syndicate members and treasurer who are members of the Executive Committee. On Monday, there were only eight FRs, GS, VP who were reportedly present at the meeting. All the teacher members of this executive committee were absent. They said “officially the committee should be informed before 48 hours ahead of the meeting, however, they were informed just few hours before the meeting”.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Goyal said: "I will look into the matter and approach the police only after there is evidence. If there is an incident on the university premises, police presence is required. However, if police are found without any permission or reason in the campus, the university can raise objections."

Meanwhile, sources said there are no such rules in the handbook which says that police is not allowed in the varsity. Syndicate member I I Pandya said: “There is no such rule in MSU handbook where police should not be allowed. This is more a party politics, than an actual issue.”

While student leaders have raised hackles on this issue, none of them questioned the MSU authorities or police on the Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA) student Srimantula Chandramohan issue, where police had barged into the faculty with a BJP leader and arrested him on charges of obscene paintings on May 9, 2007.
