Ludhiana, March 5 The demolition drive carried out by the Municipal Corporation rendered powerless a large part of the Barewal Road area. MC bulldozers, in a bid to widen the road by removing encroachments, uprooted an electric pole and damaged some wires.

The drive was started around 10 am on Wednesday and as a precaution, PSEB officials had switched off power in the area. The power supply, however, could be restored only after 8 hours.

The MC Building Branch, meanwhile, continued with Tuesday’s operation of demolishing encroachments. Shopkeepers had encroached on more than a 10-ft area of the road within their shops. The MC team, despite some protests, managed to demolish encroachments in a few shops on Tuesday evening,. Encroachments in around eight shops were demolished on Wednesday morning.

Municipal Town Planner Kamaljeet Kaur was also present during the drive today. PSEB authorities, meanwhile, confirmed that because of the damage caused during the demolition drive, four transformers developed snags affecting nearly 1,000 houses.

PSEB officials said only after the debris was cleared from the area would they be able to repair the cables. Members of the MC team said they have asked the defaulters to clear the area of debris.
