Kolkata At a time when the transport crisis in Kolkata seems to have eased a little, a new problem may have emerged. There are certain routes which the private operators are refraining from plying their buses. Despite advertisement from the Public Vehicles Department (PVD) inviting new route permit applications for the dying bus routes, there are few takers from private bus operators.

The operators, meanwhile, claim as they were forced to buy new vehicles due to the High Court ban, they are refraining from plying buses on routes that do not attract enough passengers.

The High Court had banned the plying of pre-1993 commercial vehicles within the Kolkata Metropolitan Area (KMA). “Private operators are anyway under a lot of pressure since the ban was imposed. They have to pay a large some of money to get the new buses. There are some routes which do not yield much revenue and no one at this stage wants to take a chance,” said Swarnokomal Saha of Bengal Bus Syndicate.
