Reason: Gorakhpur Texpark Private Limited, the company responsible for the park, has failed to submit the equity needed for the project. The company, however, maintained that since no investor was interested in the project, it was unable to submit the equity.

The park is a project of the Union Ministry of Textiles, to be set up under its Scheme for Integrated Textile Parks. It was a part of the 46 textile parks to come up across the country, along with the ones in Surat and Navi Mumbai. The Ministry has already sent a notice to the company, stating that the project will no longer be executed in Gorakhpur.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Nitin Jalan of Gorakhpur Texpark Private Limited said: “The policies were not feasible. The project failed to attract investors and we could not submit the equity. Investors do not wish to be a part of any project in the state.”

Initiated in the state by former Union textile minister Shahnawaz Hussain and Gorakhpur MP Yogi Adityan-ath in 2004, the park was spread across 72 acres on the Lucknow-Gorakhpur Road. The project would have not only revived the textile industry in the region, but also provided employment to thousands of youths.

In 2005, however, the Mulayam Singh-led Samajwadi Party government declined to provide land to the project and hence, the project was stalled. But in 2007, the Mayawati government agreed to provide land for the project.

According to Yogi Aditya-nath, the state government’s image is such that no one wishes set up industry here. “Firstly, there was delay in providing land for the project. Now, with no investors around, the project will die an untimely death,” he added.
