Non-govt aided college teachers to strike work on February 5, court arrest

Chandigarh, February 3 Teachers working in non-government aided colleges of the city have decided to cease work on February 5 after taking their first class and assemble in front of the office of Director Public Instructions (Colleges), Punjab, Sector 17, Chandigarh.

Teachers have taken the decision in response to the given by the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) to protest against the indifference of the Punjab government towards higher education in the state.

The president of Chandigarh District Council of PCCTU Professor Rakesh Mehta today said, “Executive members of PCCTU along with 21 teachers working in the affiliated colleges of Punjabi University, Patiala, will court arrest in support of our demands.”

Vice-president of the PCCTU Prof Anil Sarwal added that the members of the union had earlier courted arrest in September, 2007, but they had deferred their action programme following assurances by the government that their demands would be sympathetically looked into.

The decision to revive the agitation was taken in the meeting of PCCTU held on December 31 at Moga.

The president of PCCTU, Professor S S Hundal, said the teachers working in the affiliated colleges of Punjabi University will go on casual leave whereas teachers working in the affiliated colleges of Guru Nanak Dev University and Panjab University will send delegates to Chandigarh and will also hold campus rallies.

Secretary Chandigarh District Council of PCCTU Rupinder Chatha, Fellows Panjab University Professor N P Manocha and Profesor Dr Dinesh Talwar, president MCM DAV College Teachers Union Uma Joshi and president Dev Samaj College Teachers Union Jaspal Kaur have extended their full support to the agitating teachers.
