Since the plays don’t come with sub-titles , viewers will be completely befuddled unless they are linguists of sorts or are willing to guess what’s happening on stage through dramatic facial expressions. “The concept of subtitling in theatre hasn’t taken off in India,” says Daulat Vaid, director of Romeo & Juliet in Mizo, which will be shown at Kamani Auditorium on January 8.
Despite the language barrier, Kamani Auditorium was packed on the first day of the fest for Ratan Thiyam’s Manipuri play, Prologue. Thiyam, who had relinquished the Padma Shri to protest against the Centre’s indifferent attitude towards the region, might just be pleasantly surprised — there are 10 plays from the Northeast at the festival, the most ever from the area.
