“The railway police has been taking advantage of this recent outflow of migrants. They are charging money from Rs 50, Rs 150 and up to Rs 250 from passengers standing in line at the general department. Depending upon the money paid up to them, they are allowing passengers to board the train,” said Sateeshchandra Dubey, head of the parishad.
Dubey alleged that the police deputed at the railway station also harass the passengers, ruffle their bags, and take off with their valuables. “When we protest, they threaten to throw us into jails. They have threatened the women as well and have got into fights with us,” Dubey said.
The parishad has also written a letter to the Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav in this matter. “We went to meet the DRM last week to complain, but he refused to meet us. On Monday, we are going to protest till we are heard,” Dubey said.
Railway PRO Y K Singh said that the DRM was on holiday last week, which is why the groups could not register their complaint. “Otherwise, any body can meet the DRM,” he said. Inspector R R Pande of the Railway Protection Force said that this was a cheap publicity stunt. “There is no basis to these allegations. There is no question of the RPF taking money. These morchas have happened before, there are many cases against these people,” he said.
