Kolkata As the country gears to celebrate 63rd Independence Day next Sunday, students in Kolkata have taken up the initiative to polularise and sensitise people about the new symbol of Rupee. Armed with T-shirts and badges students display the new symbol of the currency at important locations in the city. “We think that there is a need to popularise the symbol of our currency. Many people still have no idea about it and don’t know what it means for the country,” said Molla Anwarul Haque, a Class XI of St Xavier’s Collegiate School.

The youths are also going to hold a rally on the Independence Day where they will be carrying banners and posters of the new symbol.

“The symbol of Rupee is something we have got new on this Independence Day, and we are going to promote it. Along with our all national symbols like our national flag and emblem, the symbol is very important and we should respect it,” said Ankik Dhar, another student. Apart from physically displaying the symbol, the students are also taking their campaign to the virtual world. On the web, the students are using social networking sites like Facebook and Orkut to raise awareness. “We also need to introspect how to take the benefits of the economic growth to every individual in the society,” said Sabeer Ahamed , a social activist in Kolkata.
