The temperature was in double digits at this time of 2007.
Though the day was one of the warmest in the last few days, the weatherman is predicting an extremely cold Friday. Delhiites can expect to wake up to temperature ranging between 1 and 2 degrees Celsius on February 1, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). BBC, meanwhile, is still forecasting a possibility of zero degrees.
The last time Delhi experienced such freezing conditions was in 2006 when mercury dipped to a record low of 0.2 degrees, on January 8, bringing with it a plethora of problems. Delhiites woke up to frost-covered streets and frost on cables caused power crisis in many parts of the Capital. The Municipal Corporation had to set up temporary shelters for over 1.5 lakh homeless people.
“That was the coldest day in 70 years of Delhi’s recorded history. Before that, Delhi had recorded 0.6 degrees Celsius on January 16, 1935,” said an IMD officer.
The IMD, however, does not expect the minimum temperature to dip below 2 degrees on Friday. “It will be cold because of winds sweeping in from the snow-capped Himalayan belt, but we are not expecting it to be a repeat of 2006,” said B P Yadav, Director of IMD at Lodhi Road.
