He attended a meeting convened by state Forest Minister Ananta Roy on Wednesday. The meeting was called following the death of a tiger that had strayed into Kultali village last Sunday. It was alleged that the tiger had died of an overdose of tranquilisers. “Postmortem of the tiger was conducted on Wednesday. It seems that it was not in good health and had some infection. But it was not administered any overdose of tranquiliser as alleged,” Raha said.
He also said the tiger had strayed into villages thrice and to prevent tigers from straying into villages the government is putting up nylon net along a 10-km stretch that runs through the villages of Kultali, Madhavpur and Kaikhali. The big cat enters into human habitats through this corridor, Raha added.
The government will also rear boars and deer and they will be released into the jungle as prey for tigers. “One of the reasons why the tigers are coming out of the jungle is shortage of food,” Raha said. He added the tiger, which had strayed into Gosaba from the Sunderbans on Tuesday, is undergoing treatment. “Its canine tooth is broken. We will keep it at the rescue centre after its treatment is over,” the official said.
