The decision was taken last year and a letter has been sent to all railway offices for implementation of the same.
Indian Railways allows family members of officials on duty to travel with them. According to the earlier rule if an official travelling in an inspection coach is required to return to the headquarters, the family has to take any other means of transport as per the fare that the official is entitled to. The inspection carriage, meanwhile, would return empty.
A senior official at CR said, “The railway officials are very happy with the decision of the railway board. Actually this decision should have been taken earlier. Sometimes the officials’ families have to wait for as long as a day to travel back. This is a good decision.”
Shyam Sunder Gupta, Chief Public Relation officer, Western Railway, said, “This is a good decision by the railway board. Everybody has appreciated this decision.” Western and Central Railway have eight saloons (inspection cars). Out of these one each belongs to the General Manager, Additional General Manager and Divisional Railway Manager, Mumbai division. Remaining five belong to principal head of department of WR and CR. These saloons are used for inspection purposes.
