Talking about the major shift in intervention cardiology during a press conference today, Dr RP Singh, Senior Consultant Cardiologist and Coordinator, SPS Apollo Hospitals, said a sharp decline in the duration of hospital stay is the first advantage of the procedure.
“The patient is more comfortable during the procedure. Moreover, post-operative recovery is much faster and easier,” he explained.
Dr Singh is credited to have conducted the first radial angioplasty in 2000 in north India. He performed the latest procedure on Baldev Singh, who was able to walk just an hour after the surgery.
“Heart disease risk in India has grown by almost 300 per cent in the last 30 years. More than 40,000 angioplasties are performed every year in India. Transradial catheterisation has attributes that may minimise discomfort after the procedure, facilitate early discharge and reduce costs,” he added.
