“Details about traffic flow or blockade upfront are helpful for vehicle users, and traffic mapping in Indian context adds more value. Compared to other countries use of AI on automobiles in India is low but automobile scenario is fast changing,” said Shrikanth Marathe, Director, ARAI.

ARAI is currently working on the AI-based Engine Control Unit (ECU) — something that will provide more safety on Indian roads. The use of AI-driven systems comes in handy for a driver with regard to security such as averting an accident or reducing impact of an accident. “ECUs with specific functions can be set up and can address security concerns of the drivers and passengers,” said D J Kulkarni, Deputy Director, ARAI.

The ECU is the brain of the various subsystem modules including powertrain, antilock braking, airbag, climate control, infotainment and remote keyless entry. ECUs can be tuned to perform specific tasks and ARAI is currently working on optimum use of it.

“Such an application can perform various tasks. The tyre pressure monitoring system can warn the driver when pressure decreases,” said Kulkarni.
