The BSP after having increased its vote share in the December Assembly polls, won 22 seats out of the 280 it contested in the municipality elections held recently. But it was in Bhayavadar where it impressed the most, winning ten seats of the total 21 in the fray. The BJP won six and an Independents' alliance –Nagrik Samiti-- won five. The BSP also formed the board easily after the BJP boycotted the board formation process. Babu Jivani, who was elected as the Bhayavadar municipality president, incidentally held the post last time as a BJP man.
The BSP believes it can gradually create a space for a third party in Gujarat, contrary to the belief that third force has no space in the state dominated by conservative politics.
“We have increased our vote share dramatically in the Assembly polls and now we have managed to even win a municipality. It gives us tremendous confidence,” said Nalin Bhatt, BSP general secretary, who resigned from the BJP over Narendra Modi's leadership.
