Gandhinagar, March 7 The Gandhinagar range has earned the distinction of being the first among others in Gujarat to introduce a system where people sitting at home can get their complaints registered with the police through e-mails. The Gandhinagar range includes the three districts of Gandhinagar, Mehsana and Sabarkantha.

According to Gandhingar range police officers, the general public can e-mail their complaints to the office of the Superintendent of Police in the three districts concerned. The separate e-mail addresses issued by the range police authorities for each of these three districts are sp-gnr@gujarat.gov.in, spmeh@gujarat.gov.in and spsab@gujarat.gov.in.

According to DIG (Gandhinagar Range) Ajaykumar Tomar, the main purpose of introducing this system is to enable people to get their complaints registered through e-mail without visiting the police station concerned in their areas. “Besides, it will help expedite the police work involving investigations into cases , and redressal of people's grievances. The system will also make the police more accountable as far as receiving complaints from people is concerned,” Tomar told Newsline on Friday.

He said the district SP concerned, would immediately after receiving the complaints through e-mail, take a print out of the same and dispatch it to the police station concerned in his district. After taking note of the complaint, an official in-charge of the police station would personally visit the house of the complainant, obtain his/her signature to register an FIR and then initiate the process of investigation. A copy of the FIR attached with a printout of the e-mail complaint will also be provided in the court, he said.

“At times, the complainant has to wait very long to get his complaint registered at the police station due to various reasons. Now, that we have introduced this novel e-mail system, the complainant need not go to the police station at all. This is an effort by the police to reach out to the general public,” Tomar said, adding that the SPs of the three districts concerned would constantly supervise this process, while he himself would monitor it on a regular basis.

Tomar said since the police stations in these three districts were facing some connectivity problems, the general public has been asked to e-mail their police complaints to the SP office only. As soon as these connectivity hassles are sorted over, the complaints could be e-mailed directly to the police stations concerned, he said.

Meanwhile, sources in the state Home department said that this experiment would soon be replicated in other ranges across the state. “In fact, the department has already undertaken the task of computerising the police stations in a big way across Gujarat,” said a senior officer.
