At present, a case is filed by an advocate representing a party. After the case is filed, the court informs the counsel concerned about the case number and the court where it will come up for hearing. Once the new facility becomes functional, an individual who wants to file a case in the District Court will just have to type in the details of the case and e-mail it to an online address available on the UT District Courts website. Once the case has been filed, a 16-digit unique number will be allocated to the case. With this number, the litigant will be able to keep a track of the case status.
The litigant would also be able to know what transpired during a hearing by simply punching in the number on the website.
The District Court and the National Informatics Centre are working on the idea which was mooted by the Supreme Court’s e-governance committee. The NIC has already made an arrangement for a “Status of Filing” link under the “Services” head on the website: www.chddistrictcourts.gov.in.
The only hurdle in the project, however, is the allotment of the required infrastructure by the e-governance committee and the NIC. For, to be able to make the facility work, the District Courts will have to be equipped with more computers. “Providing such a facility will not be possible until all the employees of the court involved in the project have a computer and know how to use it. Once we have that, the project will not take more than a month to launch,” said a court official.
