Mumbai In a bid to save people the headache of standing in long queues, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has revamped its website to make it user-friendly. People can now download forms and get detailed information on the procedures followed by the department while issuing any particular document like the driving licence.

The revamped website www.mahatranscom in was recently inaugurated by Chief Minister Ashok Chavan. Interestingly, the website’s homepage has a cartoon of noted cartoonist R K Laxman’s common man showing him confused by the present traffic system.

People can download as many 28 as forms from the website including fitness certificate and other types of forms like the learning licence, driving licence, transfer of vehicles, forms for national and other necessary permits. The website also gives detailed information about the fine charged if traffic laws are violated. It also guides passengers in case of an auto driver or a taxi driver refusing to take them to the desired destination.

In countries like Australia people need not even visit the RTO office for their driving licence as all procedures are computerised.

“Earlier, people had to stand in the long queues for getting a form and they again had to stand in the same queue for submitting the forms which is an extremely tedious process,” said state transport commissioner Deepak Kapoor.

Most of the time people are quite unaware of the departmental procedures. “They are also unaware of the rules and processes required for getting their work done. This is where the middlemen come into the picture and cheat the people. The new improved site will basically break the middlemen or at least lessen their scope of malpractices,” added Kapoor.

For the department, the initiative was a case of better late than never. “Though, we started the process of computerisation of the department later than some south Indian states, we have learnt from the mistakes committed by them. So, we have tried not to repeat the same mistakes,” said an officer.
