In two-hour-long capsule drives scheduled twice a week, the traffic police are trying to ease out congestion in the Connaught Place area by removing vehicles that block traffic. On Wednesday, 445 vehicles, including autorickshaws, were challaned while 30 were impounded. On Friday, within two hours between 3.30 pm to 5.30 pm, the traffic police challaned 1,205 vehicles and impounded 44.
Interestingly, autorickshaws are not being allowed to park next to Metro stations.
“We are targeting specific problem areas, like Middle Circle, C and D Block in Inner Circle and opposite Scindia House in Outer Circle,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Suvashish Chaudhary.
For improper parking, vehicle owners are challaned Rs 100. In case the vehicle is impounded, the owner has to spare Rs 300. “These drives will be conducted periodically till people become more disciplined in their parking habits,” Chaudhary added.
