Chandigarh, January 1 Student politics in Panjab University and affiliated colleges could witness massive changes in the upcoming year. In student politics, more importance is now provided to the organisation. It is no longer focused on individual leaders.

The implementation of the Lyngdoh committee recommendations in the PU student body elections had rendered nearly 70 per cent of the student leaders were rendered ineligible to contest the polls. It forced the parties to launch a massive hunt for candidates. The last minute scramble for candidates also robbed the parties of valuable campaigning time also. The student leaders are already taking measures to ensure that last years fiasco is not repeated this year.

Harpeet Singh Multani, president of Students’ Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) said, “The implementation of the Lyngdoh committee came as a shocker. Earlier, the electoral fate of the student organisation depended on the leaders. However, now all members will have to work collectively as a team.”

Vikas Rathee, the president of the Chandigarh unit of Indian National Students Organisation said, “We will not announce a candidate in the beginning of the academic session. We will have to strengthen the organisational structure to ensure victory in the elections.”
