Pune Three postgraduate computer science students of Nowrosjee Wadia College have bagged the first prize at the state level Software Competition held at Jalgaon. They won the prize for developing a computer-based ‘data acquisition system’ that can potentially acquire the readings for temperature, light intensity, displacement and resistance.

If this device is installed in a field and connected to a computer, the farmer is ensured a live display of the intensity of light on his crops, or the temperature and much more, all of it simultaneously. The device claims to be pertinent over a range of applications from monitoring a patient’s condition, recording the ECG or even measuring the intensity of an earthquake.

Developed by Vicky Dhas, P R Uma and Anushree Chavan, the PC-based Data Logger was one of the 50 projects, projected to the examination and questions of around 3,000 audience. Guided by Prof Nanda Ranade it also received the first place in several intercollegiate competitions across the city.

Explaining its utility, Dhas said, “The electronic circuit has sensors that collect data for the natural variables in any range. Within a span of three microseconds you have the displays on your screen, which go on in real time, and the readings are automatically stored to further analyse, manipulate or control. Although we have four sensors on this, any sensor can be added for different usages giving you an instant reading, you simply require the knowledge of units and application in order to derive the necessary outputs.”
