NRI arrested for ‘assaulting’ wife

Kolkata A 40-year-old city engineer, employed with a multinational company in the US, was arrested on charges of assaulting his wife on Thursday night. Sudip Ganguly, an NRI from Ballygunge, has been accused of mentally and physically assaulting his wife, Madhumita Ganguly.

Nearly 10 years ago, Sudip married Madhumita, soon after which the couple left for the US. One and a half years ago,

Madhumita returned to India with her four-year-old son as she was “unable to bear” her husband’s torture.

Fifteen days ago, Sudip returned to India to meet his ailing father at their Ballygunge residence. Learning of his arrival, his wife lodged a complaint of domestic violence against him at the Kasba police station.

“We received a complaint from Madhumita on December 19. We started investigations and picked up Sudip today. He was produced in Alipore court,” said a senior officer of Kasba police station.

Sudip has been arrested under Section 498 of the Indian Penal Code. He has been remanded in 10-day judicial custody.
