Pune An economic delegation from North Rhine Westphalia headed by Michael Gessner, head of the department of Energy in the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy of the state of North Rhine-Westfalia along with other members visited the exhibition Renewtech India 2009 in Pune. The delegation also met potential investor-companies and business men in the city where emphasis was laid on the region’s potential in the renewable energy sector and the opportunities it provides for Infian companies.

Nor th Rhine-Westphalia is the leading energy region in Europe. “Particularly in the field of renewable energies, North Rhine-Westphalia has a great deal to be proud of. For example, at 4.4 billion kilowatt hours, wind power makes the largest contribution to power generation from renewable energies in the state, ahead of bioenergy, hydroelectric energy, and photovoltaics. Technology from North Rhine-Westphalia is also used to produce wind energy abroad. One out of every two gearboxes installed in wind turbines throughout the world is manufactured in North Rhine-Westphalia,” said Gessner. He added that the purpose of his visit to Renewtech India in Pune was to intensify and consolidate the relations begun by Economics minister Christa Thoben on her trips to India in 2007 and 2008, especially in the field of renewable energies.

Admitting that the global meltdown has affected potential investments in NRW as in other parts of the world, Stephanus Lintker, project manager foreign affair said that this is seen as a temporary phase that needs to be tided over before things bounce back to normalcy. He added though that they see a huge market in India for renewable energies.
