A two-member team from the National Security Guard (NSG) on Monday visited the city and held meetings with senior state government officials to identify sites for setting up of a regional hub for the elite force.

Following the 26/11 terror strikes in Mumbai, the Centre had decided to set up four regional hubs for NSG.

The NSG team comprising Major Sukhvir Punia and Captain Yubraj Singh came to the Writers’ Building and met Chief Secretary Asok Mohan Chakrabarti and Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen among others.

The state government has offered the NSG two locations — Kalaikunda in West Midnapore district and Panagarh in Burdwan district — both of which have IAF bases and huge tracts of land nearby that belong to the Ministry of Defence. The hub will be set up on 1200 acres of land.

“If they select one of these two places, it is good for as it will save us from the trouble of acquiring land. Of course, we will have to acquire a little bit of land but that will not be a problem,” a senior official told The Indian Express.

The NSG team went for a recce of the land at Kalaikunda on Monday will visit Panagarh on Tuesday.

The NSG has also requested for land near Dum Dum airport where it will set up a unit for housing a small contingent of the crack commando force to be used for emergency operations, especially during a plane highjack.

“Their minimum requirement is 25 acres. We will take them to a few places near the airport on January 21,” the official said.

Later, Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen said the NSG was given options in four places.
