Ahmedabad The recent revision of the electoral list in Ahmedabad city and district has resulted in a reduction in the number of voters. Against the total number of 45,23,174 voters enrolled for the December 2007 Assembly elections, the number has now come down to 44,73,871.

The male voters exceed the females at 23,30,290 against 21,43,581.

The reason for the reduction is reported to be duplication in enrolment as also the shifting nature of the population in some of the constituencies.

According to figures available with the district election department, the largest number of deletion has taken place in Danilimda and Nikol Assembly constituencies. The number of electorates has gone down by 10,000 each in Danilimda and Nikol, while in constituencies like Maninagar, represented by Chief Minister Narendra Modi, it has gone down by almost 1,000 after a final revision.

According to Ahmedabad district officials, computerisation of the list has helped in the detection of voters whose names were enrolled in more than one constituency. “A large number of voters were found with their names in more than one Assembly constituency when we conducted a computerised check,” said Raju Brahmbhatt from the election department.

He said the duplication had occurred because people were changing their residence. “These people enrolled their names in the new constituency, but did not apply for deletion of the same from the previous constituency,” said Brahmbhat. Another official said that the names of about 275 Bangladeshis were also deleted from the electoral list. They lived in the Danilimda area.

He said the names were entered in the rolls by mistake, but as soon as it was discovered, the error was rectified.
