Chandigarh Nearly 60 nurses, employed on a contractual basis at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, are up in arms against the authorities as they have not received their salary for the month of December.

The nurses, who are paid a paltry sum of Rs 5,000 as their gross monthly salary for an eight-hour shift say the appeals made earlier for hiking emoluments, with a view to bringing them on a par with their counterparts at Government Medical College Hospital, Sector 32, have not received any attention.

“As per the terms and conditions, the salary has to be paid by the 7th of every month, but gets delayed. It is difficult to work amid such uncertain conditions when we do not know when our salaries would be coming,” said a nurse at GMSH-16.

This is not the first time when nurses, employed on a contractual basis, have been at the receiving end. A few months ago, staff employed on a contractual basis at the hospital, had proceeded on mass leave protesting the non-payment of salaries for over two months. The hospital authorities had then blacklisted the contractor to ensure that payments were made in time.

Dr S K Bhandari, Deputy Medical Superintendent of the hospital told Newsline, “We will issue a letter to the contractor on

Tuesday, urging him to pay the salary as non-payment of dues would eventually affect the working of the hospital. Since it is a contract system, the sole responsibility of payments lies with the contractor.”
