Gandhinagar In an important development, the government has decided to shift the administrative offices of all the five akademies — Sangit/Natak, Sahitya, Urdu, Hindi and Sanskrit — from Gandhinagar to Ahmedabad.

In an order issued on December 27, the State Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities Department said it has been decided to shift the administrative offices of these akademies to the Ravi Shankar Raval Kala Bhavan in Ahmedabad.

The reason: only two storeys of this six-storied Bhavan have been in use.

The department has also decided to drop the proposal of the state Archives Department to construct a separate Sanskrutik Bhavan (a cultural complex) in Gandhinagar, with the government having resolved to move the offices of the five academies.

A senior official in the Youth and Cultural Activities Department told Newsline on Thursday that the decision to shift the offices would help not only the heads of these akademies, but also those in the field of art and cultural activities.

“Ahmedabad being the centre of art and culture, it will be convenient for people engaged in such activities to visit the offices of these akademies for official work,” the official said.

“At present, the six-storeyed Ravi Shankar Kala Bhavan houses the offices of the Lalit Kala Akademi, Gujarat Sanskrutik Certification Board and the district sports officer, besides art and painting exhibitions being organised there,” he added.
