In Kareempura, storm sewer laid a few decades ago had stopped working because of illegal water connections by shopkeepers and residents.
Executive Engineer Manjit Singh said, “In Kareempura, the work is being carried out under the councillor’s quota at a cost of Rs 3 lakh. In other colonies, the work has been sanctioned under the Sangat Darshan programme. The project has been sent to the sewerage board so that they can make necessary estimates. The Punjab government will release the funds later.”
Apart from Kareempura, Purana Bazar, Jodhewal Basti, Ghati Mohalla, Kila Mohalla and Sardar Nagar in the old city will also get new sewer lines.
Though the shopkeepers in the Kareempura Bazaar are happy with the move, they fear the work will not be completed in its stipulated one-month time due to its snail’s pace.
If the work lingers on, it will cause a lot of problems to commuters near Chaura Bazar, said trader Satwant Singh.
