On being chased, miscreant shoots himself dead

Hoshiarpur A youth today shot himself dead after cops chased him. The Mahilpur police had set up a naka on the Hoshiarpur-Chandigarh road for routine checking. At 11 am, two young boys on their Yamaha motorcycle were asked to stop, but they fled away towards Bahowal Bhunno village.

A police party comprising SHO Kulwant Singh, SI Kulvir Singh and two others went in their pursuit. Suddenly, their motorcycle slipped, and the driver ran away, while the pillion fired four times at the police party.

When the police were close to nabbing him, he shot himself in the forehead and died on the spot. During the search, a .9 mm USA-made pistol, and 12 cartridges, one country-made .315 bore pistol and two live cartridges and a scythe were seized from his possession. On checking it was found that the number plate of the motorcycle was fake. The deceased was identified as Gurmukh Singh and the second miscreant as Gulshan, both residents of Beehran village, near Garhshankar.

Mahilpur police have registered a case under the Arms Act. SSP Parmod Ban said the accused were armed, and had they not been chased, they would have committed a big crime. He added that police were following leads to nab the second miscreant.
