Mumbai The Mumbai Police will get a major upgrade of its weaponry and transportation in three months and this will include the acquisition of state-of-the-art amphibian vehicles.

“With the Central Government sparing nothing to upgrade the resources of Mumbai Police, we are going in for several new upgrades, which will be in place within three months. One of these upgrades will be the procurement of amphibian vehicles that can be used for movement on both land and water. Besides this, there will be at least 15 bullet-proof jeeps that will be used in operations,” said a senior police official who did not wish to be named.

The new resources will not be for the Anti-Terrorism Squad alone, but will be for across the board. And most of these resources will be imported.

“From past experience, we have decided not to go in for domestic procurements for such things as bullet-proof vests. Instead of Level III vests, we are going to procure Level IV vests that weigh about 7 kg and can take a bullet from an AK-47 from a distance of 10 metres. We will also be procuring MP-9 sub-machine guns and night vision binoculars. We will also conduct training programmes for our men on the use of these equipment,” the officer said.
