On first day of the year, two die in road accidents

Chandigarh, January 1 Road accidents claimed two lives in the city on Tuesday. An 18-year-old, Ashok Kumar, was crushed under the wheels of a tractor-trolley in village Khuda Ali Sher.

Kumar was on his way to the village on a cycle around 4.30 pm when the tractor-trolley hit him.

The driver of the tractor-trolley has been arrested on charges of rash and negligent driving causing death.

Kumar was a resident of Mandi and had come to visit his uncle in Khuda Ali Sher, said Inspector Ramesh, SHO, Police Station-11.

An accident on the Sector 31-32 dividing road claimed 72-year-old Manbari when she was hit by a speeding car. The driver of the vehicle has been arrested.

Around 9.30 am on Tuesday, Manbari was crossing the road Sector 31-32 dividing road when a car hit her. The driver, Dr Kiran Sharma, is a resident of Sector 49 and is working in Government Multi-Specialty Hospital-16.

Sharma, instead of taking an injured Manbari to GMCH-32, which was hardly a few metre away, took her to Mukat Hospital, Sector 34, instead. Manbari succumbed to her injuries at the hospital on Tuesday evening. Manbari’s body has been kept in the hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination on Wednesday.
