On Mamata’s demand for early polls, CPM finds refuge in Constitution

Kolkata Even as Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has sought early Assembly elections in the state, Left Front leaders say the demand cannot be accommodated for want of constitutional provisions.

CPM spokesman Benoy Konar said there is no possibility of early elections in the state. “The schedule cannot be changed as it does not depend on the whims of a political leader. A violent political force is trying to destabilise the state,” Konar said.

The RSP, which had earlier demanded early elections in December 2009 after its debacle in 10 Assembly bypolls, has also supported the CPM.

RSP’s Kshiti Goswami said the Left Front will follow the directives enshrined in the Constitution. “The state government will decide the date of polls and will forward it to the Election Commission. Mamata Banerjee has no role to play in the process,” Goswami said.

Sources with the Left Front said the CPM fears that if the party is defeated in the coming civic polls, scheduled for May 30, a section of Left leaders may seek early election.

The ruling party, meanwhile, has plans afoot to recover its lost vote bank, especially in rural areas.

“People will understand what we are doing,” said Goswami.

Even as the Opposition insists that the Left Front has lost the people’s mandate, Konar said: “We are confident people will change their mind.”

A section of CPM leaders believe all forms of alliance between the Congress and the Trinamool will collapse, if the Assembly elections are held on schedule.

“After the Congress and Trinamool split ways in the civic elections, we believe the two parties will not contest the election together in 2011. But, if elections are advanced, this will damage the prospects of the Left Front,” said a leader.

Since 2008, the CPM has been routed by the Trinamool in all elections. These include: 2008 Panchayat elections, elections to 16 civic bodies in August 2009 and the December 2009 bypolls to 10 Assembly constituencies.

Promise of early Assembly poll by P.Banerjee on 13 May 2010

Only humdrum people might be taken for a ride by Mamata's promise for early assembly poll if TMC wins in Civic polls but knowledgeaable public would see through her bluff as legally and constitutionally the demand is not viable even if Central Govt so desires.
