PRK Murthy, Chief of Transport and Communication, MMRDA informed, “We had written a letter to MSRDC in December asking them to build skywalks.”
MSRDC Chief Engineer, S B Nage confirmed, “We have responded positively to the request and are ready to construct skywalks.”
The MMRDA in September 2007 had declared that it will construct 100 kms of skywalks to ease pedestrian traffic and had approved a budget of Rs 600 crore for its construction at 20 locations.
According to a senior MMRDA official, MSRDC will construct the exclusive pedestrian walkways at 10 locations where they have already carried out a study on the station areas.
“MSRDC has carried preliminary survey at some stations like Kandivali, Goregaon, Vasai, Nalasopara and few locations in south Mumbai. They (MSRDC) will carry out detailed study at these locations and plans will be approved by the MMRDA, while MSRDC will construct,” the official informed on condition of anonymity.
Murthy said, MMRDA will build skywalks at Virar and Kalyan after the Bandra skywalk, which is touted as the first ‘real’ skywalk is completed, while no decision has been taken upon the requests for skywalks at Vasai, Bhayander, Nallasopara, etc by its respective municipal bodies.
