Though launched with the primary motive of creating awareness about the environment among people, ever since its announcement, no Monday has been a no-vehicle day for the university.
Several cars could be seen plying within the campus even today, which happened to be the first Monday of the month. Topping the list of violators was PU vice-chancellor Prof R C Sobti followed by the chairpersons of various departments.
The officials, however, never fail to list this “non-implemented venture” as one of their starry achievements during most public functions.
In addition to the no-vehicle day commitment, it was also proposed that professors should peddle inside the university. The latter proposal, however, was never implemented.
While the officials had ‘driven’ into the campus today to attend the meeting of all heads of departments, they realised their folly when their pictures were being clicked.
Talking to Newsline, the chairperson of a department said, “It’s not that we do not wish to follow the no-vehicle day but most of the time we forget to remember it. I agree that it should be popularised more with all of us putting in some efforts.”

on a recent visit to the campus i discovered to my horror that in the name of protecting the environment the punjab university is making a mockery of things. they have build a pukka parking lot next to the pgi gate while a brick lined one would have been more suitable for their needs. they have macadamised all other parking lots inside the campus even though these too could have been made of interlaced brick or simple paving stones. they have covered the walls of a number of buildings in paint even though the buildings are designed-- and have been successfully been so for over three decades-- to be left unpainted and merely cleaned with plain water and rough brush once every five years. Now they are constructing a pukka pathway inside a garden even though the pathways at Sukhna Lake are plain shingled and laid with murram. In the name of planting trees they have uprooted well planted trees. Ankur school to Sarojini a green hedge has been planted where none was needed. Amazing fellows.
