Mumbai, March 7 Mithu Alur, who founded The Spastics Society of India in 1972, has been working for the education of children with multiple disabilities. This was the first such model in the country.

Alur decided to start a special school for children with multiple disability after her daughter, Malini, was born with cerebral palsy. After she failed to find understanding of the condition of the issue, Alur at the age of 25, left for England and trained herself to become a teacher and a special educator at the Institute of Education, University of London.

The Spastics Society of India has been an East West Project and professionals from UK, Canada, USA and Sweden have helped to build the technical strengths of the Society.

There’s also been strong support from the Government of India and all the premises that the organisation functions from, have been given to the Society, which is a leading body working for children with developmental disorders, for a small fee to facilitate its functioning over the years.
