One arrested for allegedly raping a woman, main accused absconding

Mumbai, January 3 The Kolsewadi police on Wednesday produced an accused before the Kalyan court in connection with a rape incident on Monday. The police arrested one Kiran Chowbey on Wednesday afternoon in connection with the rape and the court has remanded him to police custody for five days. The main accused Gabbar Thakur is however absconding.

According to investigating officer and police sub inspector of Kolsewadi police sation, DK Chaudhary, Thakur is the brother-in-law of a corporator Hanuman Pawse. Chaudhary states that probe is on to nab the absconding accused. On Wednesday the police nabbed Choubey from a STD booth in Kolsewadi following investigation. The duo have been charged with rape, outraging a woman’s modesty and causing hurt.

On Monday, a 30-year-old woman was allegedly raped after Thakur barged into her house while Choubey, threatened the victim’s husband with a chopper and forcibly took him outside.

The couple had lodged the complaint on Tuesday night as they feared the attackers. The woman was sent to Rukminibai hospital for a medical examination. According to police sources Thakur has several criminal cases lodged against him for rioting and assault. Chaudhary stated that probe is on to nab the absconding accused.
