Chandigarh, February 7 A youngster was killed and two others seriously injured in two separate road accidents that took place in the southern sub-division of the city. While Rahul (23), a Sector 40 resident, was declared brought dead at the PGI, Ankush (21) and Nitu (23) were admitted to PGI in a critical condition. Both were battling for life till late tonight. Rahul was riding his motorbike without wearing a safety helmet and succumbed to head injuries. He was the only son of his parents.

Rahul, who used to work at a call centre, had gone to Badheri village to get his motorbike back from repairs. “It was about 10.30 am, as the police told us, when the accident took place. It all started when a cyclist tried to take a wrong turn at the dividing road (Sector 40-41) opposite Badheri market. An autorickshaw behind him took a sharp right turn, following which, two girls riding behind rammed into the autorickshaw and fell on the ground. Rahul was right behind the girls’ scooter. To avoid running them over, he applied brakes because of which he fell on the ground. Since he was not wearing a helmet, his head could not bear the impact,” said one of Rahul’s relatives.

Rahul’s father Kranti Chand Dayal works as Field Officer with Markfed while mother Radha Dayal works at Department of Zoology, Panjab University. “He had graduated from Government College, Sector 11, last year. A few months ago, he landed with a call centre company. Had he been wearing a helmet, the mishap could have been averted, “ said Kranti Chand.

In another accident, two youngsters Ankush and his cousin Nitu sustained grave injuries when the motorbike they were riding was hit by a CTU bus. The accident took place at the sector 39-40 intersection. The bus driver Jaskaran Singh was arrested on charges of rash and negligent driving.

Both Ankush and Nitu were rushed to the PGI, where they were battling for life till the filing of this report. Ankush’s sister-in-law Sonika told Newsline that the duo had gone to the market to get medicines for Sonika’s mother-in-law.

“Ankush hails from Delhi. He is doing a fashion designing course from NIFD, Mohali; while Nitu was preparing for her interview and group discussion, after she scored well in CAT. The police informed us about the accident,” Sonika added.
