Chaudhury was produced before a court on Sunday and remanded in police custody for 10 days.
“We have arrested Chaudhury after detailed interrogation. He is a distant relative of Santosh Singh, who we believe has planned the kidnapping and killing of the boy. Raids are on to arrest Singh,” said Superintendent of Police, Howrah, Niraj Kumar Singh.
The police said Chaudhury, an employee of a sweet shop owned by Yash’s father Anil Lakhotia in Howrah Maidan, allegedly helped Singh.
Singh, a resident of Naskarpara in Howrah is absconding. A police team has left for Bihar to nab Singh, who is also wanted in two abduction cases in Bihar. Singh used to work for Yash’s uncle, Nandu Lakhotia, a Howrah-based promoter. Police sources on Sunday said Chaudhury knew very well that the boy would be kidnapped and killed by Singh.
The victim’s father, meanwhile, said they had no direct connection with Singh. “Santosh often used to visit my sweet shop as a customer but he was not closely related to the family,” he said.
