Three SFI supporters, Statra Chakrabarty, Sushanta Poddar and Debarjo Biswas, along with some others, allegedly beat up a first-year IC supporter Debarshi Chakrabarty. According to IC supporters, Chakrabarty
was bleeding profusely from the nose and he was taken to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital.
However, SFI supporters said the IC supporters had an internal disagreement which led to the clash and now they were blaming the SFI.
“They are blaming us for the incident but we do not have any hand in it. The IC supporters have been threatening our supporters and even beat up a few SFI girl students and have been causing problems since they realised they have lost once again,” said Tanmoy Burman, SFI secretariat member.
The SFI students denied allegations that they brought in outsiders to the college premises and claimed that they had started the security system whereby only students with college I-card would be allowed inside the premises during the election.
But IC supporters claimed that after the elections three of their supporters, including the victim, had been threatened by the SFI students and today on finding him in college they beat him up.
An IC supporter Surjo, meanwhile, said: “The SFI students kept beating us up and pelting stones at us to drive us away. They have no right to do that.”
Principal of the college Sanjiv Ghosh, however, said: “Till 2.30 pm there were no reports of any clashes in the college. I was not aware of any clashes and have just received a letter from the students where it was reported. I have forwarded it to the O-C of Jorasanko police station.” He also denied that students from outside had come into the college during the panel election today.
“We had closed the gate and if people climb over the gate it is not our failure. This is a college, not a jail and we cannot erect a 100-ft fence,” he added.
He also said that he had been threatened by a student after the IC supporter was beaten up to take action against the SFI students. “I have informed the police about it and have asked them to take action against the student and we will also be taking disciplinary action against him,” he added. Ghosh said that Chakrabarty was fine now and till late in the evening he was still in the hospital and a CT scan was being done on him.
Meanwhile, Arindan Mandal was chosen as the general secretary, Subhan Sengupta was given the post of the vice-president and Rajib Chowdhury was chosen as the assistant general secretary.
