Police said the incident took place near the Supreme Court and the police received a call around 5.15 am on Sunday.

The deceased has not been identified yet.

Police officers said that they have not been able to figure out whose fault it was as the driver of the dumper escaped from the spot soon after the incident.

The Blueline bus was plying on route number 502 (Old Delhi Railway Station to Mehrauli) when the incident took place and had around 50 passengers on board.

The police said that the impact of the collision was so severe that the dumper overturned and the bus, running on CNG, caught fire.

Raj Kumar, an injured who was discharged from hospital, said, “As soon as the bus caught fire, everyone tried to escape through the windows and the doors. I’m lucky to have escaped as the fire spread rapidly.”

The police officer said the deceased, who was severely burnt, could not be identified yet.

Eyewitnesses told the police that the bus, which started from the Old Delhi railway station, was packed with passengers, many on their way to attend a religious function in South Delhi’s Chhattarpur temple.

All injured were immediately rushed to Lok Nayak Hospital and Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital.

The Blueline driver Pappu, 35, suffered serious injuries and is recuperating.
